the stork....Fort Wayne, IN zoo

Going to zoos bothers me. I always feel sorry for the animals penned up and wish I could turn them all loose. While it is pathetic and emotionally disturbing...at the same time I cannot help but look at them. I took my son to the Fort Wayne, IN zoo and I thought so many of the animals looked rather sad. This stork was one of many animals all by himself in a large open area. No one was back there looking at him but us. He stood very regal looking I thought and the close up of his head and neck it almost looks like he is wearing a feather boa. He appears to be very very old too if you check out the head and cracked bill.

I wonder what this guy was thinking other than "I wish I could get the hell out of here!"?? Do you suppose they lose their spirit and wish they were dead?

I was not too far from the stork.....but obviously not able to use my MACRO MODE setting which I do enjoy using a lot! SO I zoomed in. With my camera I am only supposed to be able to zoom 10x......however....I have found in certain settings I can zoom all the way up to 40x! HOW? I have no clue....that is why I chose the name "photographyfordummies".....cause I don't really know all that much about it or my cameras I use.

He's a strange looking fellow. I guess I never really knew what a stork looked like, thought they were white, like the one that does the Vlasic pickle commercials. Ha!Ha! Have a great day.

I had never seen one in person before either till this one. He reminded me of a BUTLER.....standing there....in a black suit and feather boa around his neck!

I think he looks very wise. Standing there like he is trying to figure out what you are doing.

I think he looks sad. I know I would. That is why I talked about zoos in general. I like your photography on this a lot.

I think you have discovered the "digital zoom" of your camera.

Most digital cameras have a true zoom lens where the range of the lens is determined by the physics of the pieces of glass and their arrangement. This is called "optical zoom" and give the highest resolution.

But also, many digital cameras have a "digital zoom" that will take the limitations of the lens and through technical wizardry (otherwise known as software) and make your camera able to reach out farther, and bring things in closer as you've discovered here.

When you've gone past what the lens is actually capable of, and get into the "digital zoom" part, the photos aren't quite as clear. It's then a trade off, do you want the photos as clear as possible, or would you rather have more zoom range but with sligtly less sharp photos?

The software engineers are getting pretty amazing results from the "digital zoom" portions in the past few years.

I forgot to mention that a few months ago, I saw a bunch of storks in a state park here in Florida. I was astounded at how ugly they were. Maybe beautiful in their own right, but that was my assessment on seeing my first live storks, up close and personal.

I posted a couple of pics of them on my photo blog a while back, their head's look a bit different than the one you have shown here, but still scary looking.

By the way, these were "in the wild", yet they didn't look very happy either. Maybe they just naturally look down.
